Final Destination - Review

Starting today, I'm going to be reviewing the Final Destination series, starting with the first, and ending with the fifth. I re-watched the first one last night, not planning this review, so, it's pretty fresh in mind.

I remember the first time I watched Final Destination, I was about five or six, my brother, who was seven or eight, got it for Christmas on VHS and I decided to be a rebel and watch it. I don't remember my thoughts on it, but, I remember re-watching it when I was nine with my friend Tyler, we loved it. It became one of my favorites since.

Anyway, this movie is one of the greatest horror films of all time, in my opinion. Escaping death, finding it come back to try and kill you, and trying to escape it? It's great.

So, basically, Alex and a bunch of his senior classmates are going on a trip to Paris, while on the plane (as it's about to take off) Alex has a premonition, or dream, that the plane is going to explode, he freaks out and a bunch of his classmates get off. A few minutes after take-off, the plane explodes, like in his vision. Later on his classmates who got off begin dying, one-by-one, in 'accidental' ways, Alex, and his new friend, Clear, discover the pattern and try warning the others and look for ways to 'cheat' death. Sounds pretty cool, eh?

The movie starts off really great, with great character development that instantly makes you either love or hate the characters, which affects the amount of sympathy you feel when they die, which makes the movie insanely fun.

The deaths are pretty fun, too. There's a lot of tension and build-up before each one, which makes you wonder, when is this person going to die? How are they going to die? Are they even going to die? It's great.

The acting in the movie is A+
All the character's reactions to their surroundings is insanely believable, which is a great thing.

The special effects are done in a great way, the kills aren't very graphic, but, the ones that were had great make-up and such. The CGI was great, too.

Now, my favorite death in this movie has to be Terry's. She simply gets splattered by a bus. Sounds boring, but, it's not. You don't see it coming, at all, which makes it more fun. This is Terry's main scene, in the other's she only had one line, or none. But, in this one she flips out on Carter, her boyfriend, for 'beating the shit out of Alex,' after all is said and done, she turns to walk away and BAM a bus hits her. The only CGI I noticed in the entire movie, and it was done insanely well.

In general, this movie is great. It has a great plot, cast, kills, and special effects. Just about everything you need to make a good horror flick. Definitely worth checking out, if you haven't already.

Shark Night 3D; Worthy Knock-Off Of A 2010 B-Movie?

As September gets closer, I ask myself, Should I really go see Shark Night? My answer every time is .. hell yes!

The official synopsis reads "A weekend at a lake house in the Louisiana Gulf turns into a nightmare for seven vacationers as they are subjected to fresh-water shark attacks."


I'm down for any wild-animal-eating-hot-chicks'esque movie. The fact that the extremely talented Katharine McPhee is in it helps.

I read the script of this film, and it was decent. This movie definitely won't be a huge success at the box office, but it'll be a hit for teens, like me.

Basically, the sharks are robotic or some shit, and they were released to this lake by some locals so they could film their shark-related fates and put them online. Everyone dies except Sara Paxton, if I remeber correctly... all-in-all, the movie seems decent enough to go see in theaters, but, since it's PG-13, don't expect too much from it.

Do Movie Studios Reveal Too Much Spoilers?

Watching trailers and TV spots for Scream 4 and Final Destination 5, I've noticed that these studios are giving away too much, too soon. I knew that Jenny, Marnie, Olivia, Robbie, Rebecca and Deputy Hoss all died in Scream 4 just by watching the trailers! They also showed a clip of the killer holding the mask, revealing that they've been filming the murders! That twist was completely ruined, just for some publicity.

Knowing all the surprises when you're watching a movie makes watching the movie a lot less fun, because, you're not wondering what the surprises are, but, wondering when the surprises are going to happen, which, in all honesty, just sucks and ruins the movie.

I now have a dilemma, because of all the trailers, TV spots, and clips released by Warners Bros., I know who dies, and possibly when, in Final Destination 5. I even know the ending, thanks to a TV spot. Don't get me wrong, I'm still very excited to see the film, but, I'm not as excited as I could be. Why? Because the studio itself is spoiling the movie for it's fans.

So, am I the only one who's noticed that the studios are doing this? Or do I just pay too much attention to the movie itself? Tell me your thoughts! ~

3D In Horror Movies? Yay or Nay?

So, if you haven't noticed, there's been this 3D craze in the horror industry, I don't know if it's because 3D costs a few dollars extra, or just because these movie makers know a lot of people like 3D movies?

In 2009, My Bloody Valentine 3D started a new type of horror films: 3D

Though, I didn't see anything wrong with My Bloody Valentine 3D, after The Final Destination 3D came out that following August, I was getting sick of 3D horror films. Not the 3D in general, but, the awful quality in the 3D films. The special effects were terribly done with CGI. The blood looked like strawberry syrup, if that says something.

Fortunately or unfortunately, The Final Destination 3D spawned another sequel... in 3D.. but, since it hasn't been released, I won't criticize it.

In 2010, we got the 3D remake of the 70's B-movie Piranha, while the special effects weren't completely bad, the movie was clearly meant to be seen in 3D. Watching the 2D version at home, the special effects were very cartoon-ish, which was a big let down.

Well, in my opinion, 3D movies aren't worth forking out the extra $2.00 because the camera's quality looks awful, the special effects are terrible, and most of them are meant to be seen in 3D, otherwise the movie sucks.

Upcoming 3D horror flicks include Shark Night 3D, Piranha 3DD, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 3D (A remake, not a sequel).

This Generation's Scream Queen?

Well, in my last post I talked about the scream queen of the 00's, which lead me to wonder who this generation's scream queen is going to be?

Contestant number one - Julianna Guill.

Known as the girl with "perfect nipple placement" in 2009's remake of Friday The 13th, Julianna Guill blew me away, not only with her great looks, but, her great acting. Friday The 13th was her first role in a horror movie, and she definitely didn't show it, which is more than a great thing.

Guill has a small resume in the acting field, starring in films such as My Super Psycho Sweet 16 and Altitude, she also has made appearances in other films. To check 'em out click here!


Contestant number 2 - Emma Bell.

Making her first appearance in a horror'esque film, "Frozen," something about Emma caught my eye. The fact that she could, believably, pull off being stuck on a ski-lift for a few days was pretty sweet.

 Then, I saw her in TV's "The Walking Dead" and was convinced if she keeps appearing in horror'esque movies and shows, she's going to have a very successful acting career. Catch her in Final Destination 5 this Friday and click here to see her compelte filmography!

Contestant number 3 - Marielle Jaffe

Okay, she's only been in one Horror movie, but, her small role of Olivia Morris in Scream 4 showed a lot of potential in this girl.

If Marielle Jaffe does decide to continue acting, I can definitely see her being in many more horror flicks, and I'd watch every single one of them.

Well, these girls are the only ones that have caught my eye, so far, but, after a few horror movies come out, I'm sure I'll be posting a second part of this.. so, who do you think would make a better scream queen?

So, Who's Deserves This Generation's 'Scream Queen' Title?

Well, there's always that one actress who is in a bunch of Horror movies, and she usually becomes known as a "scream queen." Jamie Lee Curtis is the first scream queen, in my opinion. With titles such as Halloween, Terror Train, Prom Night and even The Fog, she definitely deserves that title.

But, a question I've asked myself a lot is "who's my generations scream queen?"

Well, in my opinion it's Crystal Lowe, known for her supporting roles in Final Destination 3 and 2006's Black Christmas.

Crystal also has great roles in movies such as Children of the Corn: Revelations, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, and Yeti: Curse of the Snow Demon, all of which are very cheesy B-movies.

She has all the elements of what I think makes a scream queen; great looks, great acting, and great roles in films.

My favorite movie she was in definitely is Children of the Corn, one of her first movies.
Though, I've only seen that movie once, in sixth grade, I remember Crystal's role pretty well, and her hilarious fate.

While taking a bath, one of the children from the corn (see what I did there?) walks into her bathroom and drops these weird, demon seeds into her bathtub resulting in corn growing in the tub, and drowning her, while her asshole of a neighbor is pounding on her wall telling her to 'shut the fuck up' as she screams. Instant classic.

Final Destination 5..? [Spoilers]

Well, I've been dreading this movie after it was announced a few weeks after the bloody mess The Final Destination was. Luckily, the teaser trailer that was release earlier this year saved me from having bad thoughts [about the film.] The fact that Emma Bell [Frozen, TV's The Walking Dead, 2 favorites of mine] is in it helps.

So, me being the impatient teenager that I am decided to troll IMDb [after the premier] for some spoilers.

Stop reading if you don't want the movie to be spoiled.

The deaths sound very.. original. Not original like The Final Destination, but original like the first installment, which is a pretty damn good thing.

The premonition deaths seem decent, someone falls onto a sailboat sail, another falls off the bridge and get hit by a falling car [ouch!]
Other deaths include people getting stabbed by falling poles, getting smashed by cement blocks, burnt by hot tar, and even cut in half by metal sheets. Sounds like a good opening, in my opinion.

Now, some the actual deaths sound a bit off, but, still good, kind of. I mean, if you like watching people get their head's crushed by giant Buddha statues, that is.

In one scene that is apparently a crowd favorite, someone [who is described as everything being a competition in their mind] is at a gymnastics tournament'esque thing, ends up swinging from an uneven bar which causes them to fall off and land in a deadly position, ultimately breaking their spine and leg. Sounds painful. Warner Bros. released the after math of this scene, so I feel that it'd only be fair to show you guys.

 Ouch..

Now, if you've seen the trailer then you should know that there's a scene involving a woman getting LASIK eye surgery, and it goes wrong. Well, she escapes with a destroyed right eye and hand. But, shortly after she gets out of that mess, she trips over a small object and falls out of a window, landing on a car.. and her eye falls out, only to be run over by a car. Sounds like a cheesy The Final Destination moment.

I won't spoil anymore deaths because the rest aren't really in any trailers or TV spots, but, I will spoil the apparent ending.

Final Destination 5 is a prequel, to the first movie. The movie ends with Molly and Sam on Flight 180, we see Alex, from the first, but they characters can't hear what he's saying so they don't get off. The plane eventually explodes and they all die. 

There's a lot more to the movie that I've left out, but hopefully I've said enough to make y'all want to see it as bad as I do.

Note* I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know if these are exactly how these characters die.
